Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander, is one of the largest cities in Colombia. Located in the Colombian Cordillera Oriental, the city is surrounded by gorgeous scenery, beautiful mountains, and ancient towns and suburbs with a lot of history, such as the nearby colonial suburb of Girón. The main sight is the whitewashed historic center of Girón; its colonial-style buildings and cobblestone streets have made it a national monument. The colonial center of the Girón neighborhood is beautiful and well preserved. The whitewashed colonial buildings are set against a backdrop of stunning mountains. Back in the city center, there is the Museo Casa de Bolívar, located in a beautiful colonial mansion with gorgeous patios. Statesman Simón Bolívar stayed in this house for two months in 1828. Exhibits include some of Bolívar’s personal items as well as furniture, documents, and other historical objects from both the colonial era and the independence period. Just across the road from the Museo Casa de Bolívar is the Casa de la Cultura, a beautiful colonial building that hosts interesting art exhibitions by local and international artists. The Catedral de la Sagrada Familia is also worth a visit. Known as “The Beautiful City” and “The City of Parks,” Bucaramanga is filled with lovely green spaces, which make it a delightful place to visit.
