Yogyakarta is a city and the capital of the Yogyakarta Special Region in Java, Indonesia. It is renowned as a center of education (Kota Pelajar), and for its classical Javanese fine art and culture, such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry, and puppet shows. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Tugu Monument: Built by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VI, the top spire was originally a round sphere representing the universe. • Benteng Vredeburg: A Dutch fort located in front of Gedung Agung (President's Palace), it is an example of Dutch colonial architecture. • Kota Gede: The tomb of the Mataram Kingdom's first king, Panembahan Senopati, is located here.
